Citizen Science: Moths & Butterflies

We need help from our community with recording moths and butterflies in the garden. No experience needed, just curiosity!

Moths and butterflies are vital pollinators and an essential part of the wider food chain. Sadly, many moths and butterflies are in decline due to habitat loss and climate change.

We want to make a difference for these beautiful creatures here at Granton Castle Walled Garden. Supporting them means supporting the health of the entire ecosystem. The Walled Garden forms a sheltered microclimate, making it ideal for moths and butterflies.

In the coming months and years, we want to focus on making the garden more butterfly and moth-friendly by planting more pollinator-friendly plants and creating habitats where they can feed and breed.

How To Take Part:

  • Visit the garden and spend time observing
  • Consult the ID resources in our citizen science shed or speak to one of our knowledgeable volunteers
  • Note your observations in the logbook in our citizen science shed
  • Join a walk or workshop if you’d like to build your skills
